Program Overview
You have chosen a program developed by teachers for teachers.
The complete Colorful Language program consists of the Colorful Language Instructor Edition, Colorful Language full-size, instructional classroom posters, Colorful Language Student Practice Books, and Kindergarten and Level 1 "Kits". The components of this research-based program were designed to work together to form a comprehensive grammar program to enhance your students' writing.
This program came as a result of a dire need that we saw in our students writing. We knew for years that our students had wonderful organization...but that's about all they had! Their writing was predictable and lacked variety. Often, we felt like we were grading the same paper over and over again. In the grammar program we were using at the time, we assumed that our students were learning different sentence structures and how to use and manipulate the different parts of speech. Perhaps they were learning them, but they certainly weren't applying them to their daily writing. We were giving our students all the tools they would need to enhance their writing, right? Wrong!
Typical grammar programs teach a skill in isolation, one chunk at a time. We needed a comprehensive grammar program that would constantly reinforce all the skills they were acquiring where students could put them into practice on a daily basis. We searched high, and low, but were never able to find exactly what we were looking for, thus the birth of Colorful Language!
Our philosophy is that extraordinary paragraphs are born of extraordinary sentences. In order for students to build extraordinary sentences, they must have a good handle on the parts of speech, and be able (and willing!) to manipulate language in such a way that nothing is left to the reader's imagination. We know Colorful Language works. We've used it with phenomenal success.
